Climate Change and Fire in the Klamath Mountains
First stakeholder workshop
April 18th
Yreka, CA
Klamath National Forest Headquarters.
A collaborative partnership in the Klamath region of Oregon and California will host it's first stakeholder workshop and is seeking interested participants!
Goals of this project are to evaluate the potential for a critical transition in the Klamath and collaborate directly with the U.S. Forest Service to identify robust strategies for ecosystem management in the face of climate change. Including the participation of Forest Service decision-makers, who manage 80% of the Klamath region, will ensure the transparency and credibility of the science, thereby increasing its impact on environmental outcomes.
The study area spans 8 million acres and encompasses a wide range of public and private lands in Oregon and California.
Forest collaboratives, industry, tribes, and non-profits are all invited to participate in the workshop. At the workshop, participants will be designing scenarios that will then be fed into researchers model of forest change.
Example management scenarios that have been discussed at previous workshops include: accelerated timber harvest for bio-energy; minimalist management, where larger portions of the landscape are in a protected reserve; and alternative silvicultural strategies, like climate suitable planting. Scenarios developed by the attendees ideally will reflect the management realities and threats for the region.
