The Lower Columbia River and adjacent coastal regions of Oregon and Washington contain a rich diversity of natural and cultural resources managed by a complex array of tribes, federal/state/local agencies, non-government conservation organizations, landowners, stakeholders and others. But our region lacks a current, comprehensive, landscape-scale blueprint that can be used to drive and align conservation efforts to achieve landscape-scale goals in response to stressors, such as climate change, energy development, and land/water use practices.
In response to this need, the North Pacific Landscape Conservation Cooperative was asked to convene partners to develop a climate-resilient Landscape Conservation Design for the Lower Columbia River and adjacent coastal shorelines of WA and OR.
The Pacific Northwest Coast Landscape Conservation Design project has made great progress since its launch in January, bringing together a number of stakeholders to form a Core Team that has finalized a draft Project Plan including a technical approach.
Project Goals:
- To foster a spirit of collaboration, communication, and continual learning among the communities and diverse interests within the study area.
- To understand how climate change and other stressors will affect the region.
- To identify a diverse suite of intact, connected, functioning ecosystems and working landscapes capable of adapting to stressors and providing important ecological functions and services.
- To create science-based, spatially explicit products that designate priority areas and the conservation actions necessary to achieve specified conservation goals and targets.
- To sustain healthy habitats for native fish, wildlife, and plant species and a suite of ecosystem services that benefit people.
The purpose of this webinar is to review the project and progress that has been made to date, and discuss next steps. We welcome anyone who is interested in this project, including those who have not been able to participate thus far. The Core Team welcomes current and new partners interested in landscape-scale natural and cultural resource conservation – and how we can adapt to large-scale stressors. If you, or anyone you know, may be interested in joining this collaborative project please join us on June 16th.
